Can men be victims of domestic violence?

When it comes to domestic violence, women and children are usually the ones portrayed as the victims. This is often the case, as men generally have a physical advantage over women and children. However, as you may know, men in Texas and elsewhere can also be victimized by their partners.

Domestic violence affects everyone, including men, as the National Domestic Violence Hotline explains. In fact, about one out of every 10 men in America suffer sexual or physical violence or stalking by a romantic partner each year, and about half of men are emotionally and psychologically abused. These numbers may be much higher than reported, as many men do not report being victims of abuse.

Why do men not report domestic violence, you may wonder? The following points are common for male abuse victims:

  • Law enforcement may not take them seriously.
  • They may fear others will not believe them or would ridicule them for reporting abuse.
  • They may worry the court will favor the mother of their children.
  • Women may use weapons in physical attacks or attack men in their sleep, to make up for having less physical strength.
  • They may be ashamed of failing their family or not being able to stop the abuse.
  • Men have fewer resources to protect them from domestic violence than women do.

While resources to help abused men are not plentiful, more people are beginning to become aware of this problem. Since experienced counsel is necessary to help victims escape abuse, this information should not replace the advice of a lawyer.
