When should your custody arrangement be changed?

Texan parents who have set up a child custody arrangement may not find themselves benefitting from that arrangement forever. There are many different reasons that a custody modification could be suggested and put into motion.

The Spruce highlights five reasons for child custody modifications, each different from the last and all equally valid. Physical relocation is one possibility, especially if the distance becomes too great for the child to travel with any measure of practicality. If the child's life is interrupted by the move, it may also be a good reason to modify the custody arrangement.

The personal safety of the child will also be considered. If you believe there's evidence of domestic violence or abuse, an immediate danger to your child's well-being, or if they show apprehension or unhappiness at the thought of going to their other parent's house, this may be something to look into. An inability to keep up with your current custody schedule either unintentionally or intentionally is also a valid reason to redo the arrangements, even if these actions aren't made with malicious intent.

Finally, your child's preferences may be taken into consideration. The custody arrangement was initially set up with their best interest in mind, so if they express a desire to spend the majority of their time with one parent over the other, the preference may be considered seriously by the court.

Other reasons to request custody arrangement modification include the death of a spouse, the age of the child, and more. The first step to making these needed modifications is to see if your reasons are among the many that are considered acceptable.
