Tips for your paternity case

If you are going through a divorce in Texas, one of the most complicated aspects can be the division of responsibility for your children. In many cases, a judge will require you to undergo paternity testing to prove that you are the father of your children and entitled to some level of custody over them. We at the Law Office of Brian Turner can represent your rights during a court case and offer any assitance if you need help proving that you are the father.

According to the Texas Attorney General, if you are not married to the child's mother, simply having your name on the birth certificate does not solidify your rights as a father. Even if you are named on that document, you may still need to prove the legal relationship to the child.

There are a few different ways that you can prove paternity. If your ex-spouse is willing, you can both sign an Acknowledgement of Paternity. If this does not work, you can petition the court and submit to genetic testing to prove your relationship. If you open a child support case through the office of the Attorney General, the genetic testing may be free of charge.

It is also important to be aware of potentially serious legal actions. If you receive a summons to go to court, you need to obey it or risk being excluded from decisions. Also, do not sign anything until you fully understand the consequences, as doing so can be binding. For more information on paternity, please visit our web page.
