Creating your Texas parenting plan

Once your custody allotments have been determined, the next step toward a finalized divorce is creating a parenting plan. There are many rules and guidelines set forth by the state of Texas that you will need to follow, and we at the Law Office of Brian Turner can help you build a plan that will meet the state requirements as well as the needs of you and your ex-spouse.

According to, if you are each given some custody of the child, it is referred to as a joint conservatorship. If one parent is given sole custody, this is referred to possession and any visitation time is considered access to the child. Most parents are given a joint managing conservatorship, meaning you will both take some part in making decisions and handling the responsibility of care for your child.

The state of Texas requires that parents include a division of duties in their parenting plan. This should detail who will be in charge of the education, physical care and support, including which house will be the child’s primary residence. You may also need to include provisions that will guide how you will both care for your child.

You will also need to provide a schedule for parenting time. This will depend on the level of custody that has been allotted, but all schedules should detail when the child will be with each of you and how disputes will be resolved.
